New York Archery Season Opens October 1st

NYS DEC 2012 Regular and Bowhunting Deer Seasons

It’s a big win for bowhunters in New Yorkarchery season now officially opens on October 1st in the Southern Zone, Westchester County and Long Island!

I’m very excited to see that this went through and we’ll be able to start our archery season a full two weeks earlier this year. Hunting early season is something I really enjoy. I’ve been fortunate to take advantage of the September 15th opener in Connecticut and you really get to see how the deer act before the acorns really start dropping and their patterns change.

Once the pre-rut starts around Halloween, the deer start moving outside of their normal home ranges and hunting a “local” buck becomes harder and harder. Once the rut kicks in the bucks seem to pick up and go on excursions looking for does outside of their home range.

This year, bowhunters in New York will have a better chance of catching up with the big bucks they’ve been watching all summer. There’s a chance they’ll still be on their summer patterns and be a bit more predictable.

I know I’m excited about the October 1 opener, but how do you feel about it? Are you looking forward to it? Or is it just too early to be in the woods?
