The Todd Buck

David Todd was hunting Cortland County on the morning of October 29th when he arrowed his largest buck after 25 years of bowhunting.

David was in the woods and settled in the stand by 6:40 am on the crisp, windless morning of October 29th. The woods were quiet until 7"45 am when David spotted antlers coming up the hill about 60 yards away.

The Venti Buck - A Triple Brow Tine Giant

On Saturday, November 5th, Mike Venti arrowed the buck he had been after since he first showed up on trail camera this past summer. Mike watched the buck grow all summer long from a "possible shooter" to a 130" class buck to a 160" class buck and bigger. One unique feature of this buck was his triple brow tine.

Not much on this one yet. All I know is it was shot yesterday in Allegany County. That's a big buck though! Anyone know more about this deer?

Junior Hunter Tags Big Buck

A big part of being a successful bowhunter is being patient and persistent. Bowhunting takes dedication and you have to put your time in to succeed and that's exactly what sixteen year old Jonathan Mule did on November 5th.

My First Buck - the Tall Tine 8 Pointer

Chris Paulo was bowhunting in Westchester County on November 6th in hopes of taking his first buck with the bow. With a mock scrape and some buck lure out in front of his stand Chris saw the tall tined eight pointer step out of the thicket around 4:35 pm with his nose to the ground. The buck started feeding for a few minutes and then began making a rub. Chris took the opportunity to draw back his bow while the buck was occupied rubbing the tree and sent the arrow on its way. The buck was down within 60 yards and Chris had his first buck ever! Congrats to Chris on an amazing whitetail.

14 Point Buck "Brutus" Falls in New York

While hunting along the edge of a small secluded field in Genesee County with high hopes of seeing a shooter buck this hunter didn't expect a monster 14 pointer to step out.

The hunter knew he was hunting in a hot spot, but had only seen three deer all afternoon. Beginning to get a bit restless as dusk was approaching, the hunter started moving along the field edge hoping to cut off some deer going into the field before dusk.

Big Bucks in the Hudson Valley

Several members of the Hudson Valley Sportsman forum have been posting pictures of some big bucks! It's proof that antler restrictions are working in the areas they're being implemented in.

nyPredator passed on two seven pointers and a six pointer before letting an arrow fly at this Ulster County 8 pointer on October 26th. He's been shooting progressively bigger bucks each season over the past six years and believes antler restrictions are the reason why.

NYS DEC Urges Hunters Not to Shoot Collared Black Bears

The NYS DEC is asking hunters to not shoot black bears that are wearing radio collars this fall. Although it is not illegal to shoot bears wearing radio collars, these bears are part of an ongoing research project between the DEC and Cornell University.

Currently, twenty-four black bears have been fitted with GPS collars in Allegany, Steuben and Livingston counties. The collars are used to track the bears' movements and learn more about the bears and their home ranges.

If a hunter chooses to harvest a black bear wearing a collar the hunter must be returned to the nearest DEC office so the data within the collar can be recovered. Hunters may report sightings of collared or tagged bears to the NYS DEC office at (716) 372-0645.

For more information about black bears, please visit DEC’s website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6960.html . More detailed information about the radio collar research project is available at http://www.coopunits.org/New_York/Research/Active/2.7594930177E10/.

Black Bear Hunting in the Snow

Just saw this up on Hudson Valley Sportsman. Member DXT took this awesome black bear with his bow on Halloween morning - this always seems to be the time when things start picking up, but the crazy snowstorm this past weekend really put things into high gear. Congrats to DXT on his archery bear!
